With gas prices at near record highs, Georgia Gov. Sonny Perdue today challenged state agencies and businesses to continue to expand commute alternative programs. “Gas prices and long commutes are a challenge for many employees,” said Perdue. “Many employers, including state government, have developed a range of options for workers that help them save on fuel costs and enjoy stress-free commutes. Continuing to offer these programs and expand them where possible is a great way to reduce congestion and help employees deal with the burden of high gas prices.”

Instead of subsidizing mass-transit options, it would be nice if employers would subsidize mortgage payments for workers who buy more expensive homes closer to work.

For example, someone living 5 miles from work vs. 25 miles would save $5800 per year. If they put that savings toward a mortgage payment, they would be able to buy about a $50,000 more expensive home. By subsidizing mortgage payments, employers would be taking environmental responsibility even farther because they would eliminate the need for long distance commuting vs. just lowering the impact.
